The Buckeye Shale Energy Organization at The Ohio State University is an organization like no other at Ohio State. It is in support of the Oil and gas industry in Ohio and it intends to promote the growth of this industry in Ohio. Many of the members of this unique organization such as the president, a couple of the board members, and also many of the founding members are from Youngstown, Ohio. This is relevant because the Youngstown area is currently experiencing an economic rejuvenation due to this industry and these students have recognized this. There is shale by the name of the Utica Shale that is causing tremendous economic growth in Northeast Ohio. The type of growth that hasn’t been seen in this area since it was one of the top steel producing areas in the country back in the 1970’s. This has caused a serious change to the identity of downtown Youngstown. Here is a link to an article and video that will help to show and explain these changes http://www.wfmj.com/story/20106641/the-changing-scene-of-downtown-youngstown
The main goal of this organization is to connect students to employers within this industry, but they also are in support of and intend to promote this industry in Ohio. In order to help make these connections the BSEO holds an annual networking event in which employers from within this industry come to meet students from the BSEO. This seems to appeal to the employing companies because it allows them to be introduced to new young minds that want to be a part of their industry. This networking event along with the biweekly meetings that are held by this organization also help to provide all members anybody else that wants to come with a tremendous variety of information about this industry. They host a different speaker every week that is there to share his experiences and provide advice that can help to students from within the BSEO to succeed in the oil and gas industry. Here is a link to a website where The BSEO President, Vince Melillo talks a little bit about the BSEO. There are also videos of other influential speakers from within the oil and gas industry. This site also contains some relevant information on the Shale development and the types of opportunities that it can bring into Ohio. The BSEO provides a lot of opportunities that pretty much no other organization can , and those that choose to join it will be part of an up and coming student organization.
College football is a sport that is truly unlike any other. There are over 115 teams that compete in Division 1 A college football alone and all of them ontain athletes that are giften enough to make it to ths level of football. Most people would argue that this is exactly why a college football playoff is a necessity. Underdogs win all the time n this sport and that seems to be what the country wants to see, so a playoff would allow fans to see this happen more and in times when it matters more as well. The top four team playoff that is coming to the sport will truly provide an opprtunity for teams to compete for a national championship that may never have made it without this system. The current BCS program that that college football rely’s on contains to many flaws for it to be relied on anymore. There are to many computers that are involved in making the standings. No matter how you spell it, every team has eleven players on the field at all times. Any team can win at any given time which is why the only way to decide who is the best out of four teams is to have them play each other.j Even though the plyoff system seems to be prferred throughout the country, some people are still confused as to why it is just now being implemented. I mean there have been plenty of situations throughout the years when this system could have been used. There are also some that still support the BCS, but overall I think that tge majority of college football fan asre exited to see a playoff. This article helps to show some of the opinions from people who were influentil in impememnting thi system. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/stewart_mandel/04/26/bcs-four-team-playoff/index.html. This article helps to show why this system should be implemented along with the benefits that it can provifde for college football. Overall college football is a sport like no other, and the new playoff system will only help to make it better.
Social media has impacted the world in a way that no other form of communication possibly could in society today. Social media is used by children and adults all over the world and it provides a way for people to communicate with each other and to gather useful information very simplistically. For example, when using twitter, people use it to post comments, to communicate with friends, to post pictures, and also to gather newsworthy information. If something big is going on in our country such as a presidential debate, a tragic event, or just something that is widely perceived as being important then you will see it on twitter. I personally gather the majority of the news that I consume through twitter. I could wait until the six or eleven O’clock news to try and gather the information that I want to hear about, but why would I do that if I can gain the same amount of knowledge through social media. Granted the actual news may have a lot more of a wide variety of news content in it, but when I watch the news, I personally just want to see the part that I turned it on for. If I’m waiting to watch weather, sports, or even just an intriguing story, then I do not want to take the time to sit through the multiple other stories that will be shown. This is where twitter comes in. If I want to know when something crazy is happening in our country, then all I have to do is follow CNN, MSNBC, or some other news outlet and they will be posting about the event as it is happening. Also If I wanted to know the score of a sporting event, I would just follow the twitter account for that team, and it would provide updates on the game, or it would at least provide me with an idea of what is happening. Twitter really helps us to see that there are newsworthy events happening around us all the time. Sometimes these events can even be relevant to us and we don’t even realize it. I found an article that helps to explain this phenomenon and it also helps to show why twitter makes useful information in the media so easy to obtain. This article can be found at http://gigaom.com/2012/02/13/twitter-and-the-incredible-shrinking-news-cycle/. The article is a great example of why so many people are on twitter, and why the amount of people on it still continues to grow. I personally think that with the growth of twitter that the amount of people who take the time to watch the news will continually dwindle. Twitter is a social network and anyone who uses it knows this all too well, but it can also be used as a news outlet to gain useful information that applies to today’s youth.
The first advertisement that I can remember seeing is the Coca Cola polar bear ad. When I say my first ad I don’t mean it’s the first ad that ever saw. I really have no idea what the first ad that I ever saw was, but this ad was the first one that had an impact on me. I remember the ad grabbing my attention as soon as I saw it and it forever changed my perception about Coca Cola and pop in general. Throughout my life whenever I thought of pop I thought of Coca Cola. Coca Cola also immediately became my favorite type of pop. Whenever it came to distinguishing between the similar brands of Coca Cola and Pepsi, I always chose Coca Cola. Here is a link to the commercial so that you may see the influence that this ad can have for yourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jgf-_j_mZ8&feature=related. Now that I’m older it doesn’t have the effect on me that it did when I was younger, but I can definitely see why it impacted me so greatly. The incorporation of Santa Clause and the creativity of using the polar bear does a great job of grasping the attention of the audience, especially a younger audience. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the polar bear in these ads is that it never speaks, it just says ooh, ah, or it sometimes grunts. It’s truly amazing that Coca Cola was able to grasp the attention of such a large audience with a character that doesn’t even speak. Coca Cola published an article on the history of the polar bear in its ads, along with some interesting information about the polar bear and its history. This article helps to show why they used the polar bear and also why it was so effective. It can be found at http://www.coca-colacompany.com/stories/coke-lore-polar-bears. This commercial absolutely did its job, and I would also say that it live up to the expectations that Coca Cola had for it. Coca Cola basically became my favorite pop before I ever drank it. All I and many other children needed to see was that polar bear on the box and that was what we wanted. This shows that Coca Cola achieved exactly what they were looking to do. They developed a worldwide icon that was viewed as something that all children wanted. When I was younger and I thought about drinking pop, the only pop that came to mind was coke, and that alone shows that this advertisement did its job. There are few other Icons that can be directly associated with their company like the polar bear can be with Coca Cola. Some that could be compared could be Tony the Tiger, the Aflac duck, the Geico lizard, etc. but when it comes down to it whenever I see a lizard I think of Geico, when I see a duck I immediately think of Aflac, and when I see a polar bear whether it be in a zoo, on TV, or in a Coca Cola commercial, I automatically think of Coca Cola.
Live tweeting an event is a unique way to use a social network. Whether it is just you or multiple people at an event, you are able to provide useful information that you could be learning for the first time as well. Live tweeting is definitely very different than other types of twitter conversations such as twee chats or just general tweeting, although tweet chats and live tweeting do have some things in common as well. In tweet chats there are multiple people all joining in to create a larger twitter conversation. The conversation is basically everyone stating their opinions or likes and dislikes about the event that caused the tweet chat to occur. This happens a lot while live tweeting from an event as well. There may be multiple people live tweeting an event together. Another thing that tweet chats and live tweets have in common is that they both use hash tags to try and connect all of the people that are tweeting about the same thing. An article that I found on https://dev.twitter.com/media/live-tweeting goes on to show why people should live tweet and how hash tags can help in doing so. It also helps to explain why people live tweet. General tweeting is definitely a lot different than live tweeting from an event. When people generally tweet it can be about pretty much anything and this is not the way it works when it comes to live tweeting. Live tweeting from an event means that you will mainly tweet about the things that are happening at your particular event and your opinions on those things. When it comes down to trying to differentiate between these three different types of tweeting and which one I like the best it is difficult to do. They all have their own advantages. When generally tweeting you can feel free to tweet about anything that is appropriate to be visible to the public. When in a tweet chat you and friends or classmates can have social interaction, or actually discuss important subjects. When Live tweeting from an event the tweets and hash tags are current and up to date with the information that is being presented at the event. Although this is an advantage to live tweeting, I also see it as a disadvantage as well. The fact that you have to tweet about the event that is occurring limits you to what you can tweet. It also limits the amount of people that will pay attention to what you are tweeting about, because depending on the size of the event, the amount of people that want to see these live tweets will be limited. Although this does benefit the people that do want to know what is happening at this event and if the event is large enough the amount of people that can be impacted by someone live tweeting from it can be vast. For example an influential figure that is live tweeting from an event such as a presidential debate will gain many followers, and in doing so will also help to spread his or her opinion on the topic at hand. The hash tags that they use could also end up trending which will cause them to be even more widespread throughout the twitter world.
Digital communication has both changed and in many ways improved the press release. Due to the integration of digital communication there are many new ways for those who are printing to the press release to send them out to the media. Digital communication also allows for those who receive the press release to be able to respond or forward it to anyone else who might want to read it. In the past there was no quick and easy way to communicate. Now people can just pick up the phone to send a text, or send an email and both texting and email along with many other digital communication tactics can send tremendous amounts of information in just a few seconds. This is a large reason why messages both spread to the press and throughout the media in such a short amount of time. Digital communication is an art that is almost foreign to older generations, because it has grown with the younger generations within our society, but this should also aid it in evolving further. According to the Pew Research Center, “In nearly every country, the young and the well-educated are especially likely to embrace all of these technologies. People under age 30 and college graduates tend to use their cell phones for more purposes than those in older age groups and those without a college degree, and they are also more likely to use social networking sites.” This is not to say that social media is only for the young generations because there are many PR and marketing specialists that use digital communication every day. The Pew Research Center also goes on to elaborate on global digital communication, by the use of smart phones and social networking in this article http://www.pewglobal.org/2011/12/20/global-digital-communication-texting-social-networking-popular-worldwide/. Digital communication can also aid in the creation of a press release by helping to get the message that it contains across. Nobody wants to see a plain old press release in bold print. It just doesn’t stand out, but when you send one with graphics, pictures, and designs or even a digital release with a video in it, it really helps to grasp the attention of the audience. It also makes the PR or marketing specialist that received the release to spread the message. One of the most important goals of a news release is to make the content of it interesting and newsworthy, and adding digital media components to it will only help to do so. According to The Princeton Review, “Multimedia developers and managers use digital communications methods to create any variety of entertainment, graphic design, and artistic productions.” More information from this article can be found at http://www.princetonreview.com/Majors.aspx?cip=090702. Overall the impact that digital communication has on the art of writing a press release is tremendous. It has made it easier to draw the attention of the audience to the message that the writer wants to convey. Digital communication is a concept that is relatively new, and has evolved with the younger generations in our society, and this will only continue to occur.
The tweetchat that took place for the OSUPRSSA meeting was actually pretty interesting. Mindi wells taught me and many other people a great deal of information that we would not have known otherwise. For instance all of the questions that you cannot be asked in an interview were pretty amazing. Some of them were marital status, age, and religious affiliation. I feel like these are questions that can be asked in casual conversation. For all I know I could have been asked these questions in an interview before, and answered because I didn’t know they were illegal. The other questions were all interesting as well, but I didn’t think that any were as interesting as the first one. For instance she also asked how you would answer when asked a difficult question. I had to think for a while about this, but then I did recall a time when this happened to me. I was asked a question that I was not prepared for in a previous interview, and I just remained confident, and answered to the best of my ability. I guess this tactic worked for me because I did end up receiving the job. I was not at the meeting, but just through the tweets and conversations that were taking place I could tell that Mindi was a great speaker. Over all the tweetchat was very useful and informative, but due to the amount of people that were in it, and the amount of time that it takes for the tweets to load, you see a lot of “repetitive tweeting.” What I mean by this is when multiple people are tweeting similar things about the same topic. It’s not anybody’s fault, but when your looking for new information it can get a little annoying. Besides this I believe that tweetchats are very beneficial, and can help to transmit information about a meeting or event to people who aren’t even there.
