Is twitter a Friend or Foe to the News?

Social media has impacted the world in a way that no other form of communication possibly could in society today. Social media is used by children and adults all over the world and it provides a way for people to communicate with each other and to gather useful information very simplistically. For example, when using twitter, people use it to post comments, to communicate with friends, to post pictures, and also to gather newsworthy information. If something big is going on in our country such as a presidential debate, a tragic event, or just something that is widely perceived as being important then you will see it on twitter. I personally gather the majority of the news that I consume through twitter. I could wait until the six or eleven O’clock news to try and gather the information that I want to hear about, but why would I do that if I can gain the same amount of knowledge through social media. Granted the actual news may have a lot more of a wide variety of news content in it, but when I watch the news, I personally just want to see the part that I turned it on for. If I’m waiting to watch weather, sports, or even just an intriguing story, then I do not want to take the time to sit through the multiple other stories that will be shown. This is where twitter comes in. If I want to know when something crazy is happening in our country, then all I have to do is follow CNN, MSNBC, or some other news outlet and they will be posting about the event as it is happening. Also If I wanted to know the score of a sporting event, I would just follow the twitter account for that team, and it would provide updates on the game, or it would at least provide me with an idea of what is happening. Twitter really helps us to see that there are newsworthy events happening around us all the time. Sometimes these events can even be relevant to us and we don’t even realize it. I found an article that helps to explain this phenomenon and it also helps to show why twitter makes useful information in the media so easy to obtain. This article can be found at http://gigaom.com/2012/02/13/twitter-and-the-incredible-shrinking-news-cycle/. The article is a great example of why so many people are on twitter, and why the amount of people on it still continues to grow. I personally think that with the growth of twitter that the amount of people who take the time to watch the news will continually dwindle. Twitter is a social network and anyone who uses it knows this all too well, but it can also be used as a news outlet to gain useful information that applies to today’s youth.
